Endomychidae
Handsome Fungus Beetles
Introduction:
Endomychids can sometimes be confused with several other beetle families (e.g., erotylids and cryptophagids) but can usually be distinguished by their 4-4-4 tarsal formula and parallel grooves leading to basal pits on the pronotum.
Adult Diagnosis:
frontoclypeal suture present
pronotum with sub-basal grooves and two longitudinal impressions or pairs of basal pits
pronotum larger than head
tarsal formula 4-4-4 or (3-3-3 in some)
Ecology:
Endomychids are often found in fungi and are mycophagous on spores and hyphae of microfungi and large basidiomycetes. Many can be most commonly collected at night searching dead logs and trees with a headlamp. Several species may be attracted to cantharidin in large numbers.
