Introduction:
These beetles resemble some adult elaterids and dascillids in general form; larvae are elaterid-like but the labrum is distinct (not fused and forming a nasale as in elaterid larvae).
Adult Diagnosis:
prosternum with paired carinae elytra each with an internal, apicoventral interlocking (with abdomen) “tongue”
tarsal formula 5-5-5; tarsomeres 2-4 or 3-4 lobed, beneath abdomen with 4-5 connate ventrites (not free as in Dascillidae)
Ecology:
Adults may be found in forest foliage; larvae of Artematopus have been found in soil; those of Macropogon and Eurypogon feed on leaves and rhysoids of mosses (e.g., Paraleucobryum longifolium) growing on rocks.
